Why This Matters
Everyone wonders where their money goes. You check your bank account, the number is lower than you expected, and you think, "Wait, what did I even spend that on?"
Most budgeting apps want you to connect your bank account and hand over your financial data to a company you've never heard of. With Claude Code, you can analyze your spending right on your own computer. Your bank data stays on your machine. It never goes to the cloud. It never gets uploaded anywhere.
Let's Do It
Step 1: Download Your Statement
Log in to your bank or credit card's website. Look for a button that says Download, Export, or Download Transactions. Most banks offer this somewhere in your account or statement page.
When it asks you what format, pick CSV. It's just a simple spreadsheet file. Claude reads it easily.
Save the file somewhere you can find it. Your Downloads folder works fine. You could also make a new folder on your Desktop called "spending" and save it there.
Step 2: Open Claude Code in That Folder
Open your terminal. Type this to go to the folder where you saved the file:
cd ~/Downloads && claude
Or if you saved it to a folder on your Desktop:
cd ~/Desktop/spending && claude
Step 3: Ask Claude to Analyze It
Now paste this into Claude Code:
I have a bank statement CSV in this folder. Can you find it, read through my transactions, and tell me where my money is going? Group my spending into categories like food, transport, subscriptions, shopping, and entertainment. Show me the totals for each category.
Claude will find the CSV file, read through every transaction, and group them into categories. It will show you something like:
- Food & Dining: $487.32
- Subscriptions: $142.97
- Transport: $89.50
- Shopping: $234.18
- Entertainment: $67.00
The exact categories and numbers will depend on your spending, of course. But you get the idea. In about 10 seconds, you have a clear picture of where your money went.
Step 4: Go Deeper
The best part is you can ask follow-up questions. Claude remembers everything it just read, so you can have a conversation about your spending:
Which subscriptions am I paying for?
Claude will list every recurring charge it found. You might discover subscriptions you forgot about.
What did I spend on food this month?
Claude will show you every restaurant, grocery store, and coffee shop charge.
What's my biggest single purchase?
Ask whatever you're curious about. Claude has already read the whole file, so follow-up questions are instant.
A Note on Privacy
This is one of the things that makes Claude Code special. Everything stays on your computer. Your bank file stays on your computer. Claude reads it right here and the data is not stored anywhere afterward. When you close Claude Code, the conversation is done.
That's a very different experience from most budgeting apps, which require you to link your bank account and share your data with third parties.
What You Learned
You can download a bank or credit card statement as a CSV file, point Claude Code at it, and get a clear breakdown of your spending in seconds. You can ask follow-up questions to dig into specific categories. And your financial data never leaves your computer.
This is a great example of something Claude Code is perfect for: taking a pile of data you already have and turning it into answers you actually want.
