Why This Matters
Sometimes it's easier to show than to tell. You could try to describe that confusing chart from work, type out that error message on your screen, or explain what a restaurant menu says in another language. Or you could just take a screenshot and paste it into Claude Code.
Claude can see images. When you paste a screenshot or drag in a photo, Claude looks at it and understands what's there. Then you can ask questions about it, just like you would with text.
How to Take a Screenshot
First, you need to capture what's on your screen. Here's how:
- On Mac: Press
Cmd + Shift + Ctrl + 4to select an area of your screen. This copies the screenshot directly to your clipboard, ready to paste. - On Windows: Press
Win + Shift + Sto select an area. The screenshot gets copied to your clipboard.
That's it. The image is now copied and ready to paste.
Let's Do It
Step 1: Open Claude Code
Open your terminal and start Claude Code:
claude
You don't need to be in any particular folder for this. You can paste images from anywhere.
Step 2: Paste the Screenshot
With Claude Code open, just paste:
- On Mac: Press
Cmd + V - On Windows: Press
Ctrl + V
Claude will show a small preview of the image in the terminal. You'll know it worked when you see it appear.
Step 3: Ask Your Question
Now type your question. You can ask anything about what's in the image:
What is this?
That's the simplest version. Claude will describe what it sees. But you can be more specific:
Can you explain this chart?
What does this error message mean?
Can you read the text in this image?
Translate this menu to English.
Claude looks at the image, understands the content, and answers your question. It's that simple.
Cool Things to Try
Once you know Claude can see images, all sorts of ideas come to mind. Here are some of the most useful ones:
- Confusing charts from work. Paste a screenshot of a chart or graph and ask Claude to explain what the data shows.
- Error messages. When something goes wrong on your computer, screenshot the error and ask Claude what it means and how to fix it.
- Handwritten notes. Take a photo of handwritten notes and ask Claude to type them up for you.
- Restaurant menus in other languages. Snap a photo and ask Claude to translate it.
- Math problems. Take a picture of a math problem from homework and ask Claude to walk you through how to solve it.
Drag and Drop Works Too
You don't always have to take a screenshot. If you already have an image file saved on your computer, you can drag it directly into the Claude Code window.
Just open Finder (on Mac) or File Explorer (on Windows), find the image file, and drag it into the terminal where Claude Code is running. Claude will see it the same way it sees a pasted screenshot.
This is handy when you have a photo from your phone that you've already saved to your computer, or when someone sends you an image in an email and you download it.
What You Learned
Claude Code can see images. You can paste screenshots, drag in photos, and ask questions about anything visual. Charts, error messages, handwritten notes, menus, math problems, receipts, labels. If you can see it on your screen or capture it in a photo, Claude can help you understand it.
This turns Claude from something you can only talk to into something you can show things to. That's a big deal. It means you never have to struggle to describe what you're looking at. Just show it.
