Why This Matters
Typing in a terminal can feel slow. But you don't have to type. You can just talk. There are apps that listen to your voice and turn your words into text, and they work inside Claude Code. Say your prompt out loud, your words appear on screen, and Claude gets to work.
What You Need
You need a voice-to-text app. It's a small app that listens to your voice and types out what you say. The text goes wherever your cursor is. If your cursor is in Claude Code, your spoken words go straight to Claude.
There are two great options:
- SuperWhisper (Mac only) is fast, accurate, and free to start
- Voicy (Mac, Windows, and Linux) works on every platform
Pick whichever one works for your computer. We'll walk through both.
If you use a Mac, follow the SuperWhisper steps below. If you use Windows or Linux, skip down to the Voicy section.
For Mac Users: SuperWhisper
SuperWhisper is the best voice-to-text app for Mac. It uses AI to understand your words with very high accuracy, even if you speak fast or mumble a little.
Step 1: Download SuperWhisper
Go to superwhisper.com and download the app. It's free to start with a generous trial.
Install it like any other Mac app. Drag it to your Applications folder and open it.
Step 2: Grant Microphone Access
When SuperWhisper opens for the first time, your Mac will ask if it can use your microphone. Click Allow. Without this, it can't hear you.
SuperWhisper will show you a keyboard shortcut for activating dictation. The default is usually holding down a key. Remember this shortcut. You'll use it every time you want to talk.
Step 3: Open Claude Code
Open your terminal and start Claude like normal:
claude
You should see Claude waiting for your input. Your cursor is blinking in the prompt area. This is where your spoken words will appear.
Step 4: Hold the Shortcut and Talk
Now hold down the SuperWhisper keyboard shortcut and start talking. Say something like:
"Build me a simple webpage that says hello world with a blue background and white text. Save it as index.html."
When you let go of the key, SuperWhisper converts your speech to text and types it into Claude Code. You'll see your words appear, just like you typed them.
Press Enter and Claude starts working on your request. That's it. You just talked to your computer and it listened.
For All Platforms: Voicy
If you're on Windows, Linux, or want an alternative on Mac, Voicy is a great choice. It works the same way.
Step 1: Download Voicy
Go to usevoicy.com and download the version for your computer.
Step 2: Install and Set Up
Install the app and grant it microphone access when asked. Voicy will set up a keyboard shortcut for you, just like SuperWhisper. Look for it in the app settings.
Step 3: Use It with Claude Code
Open your terminal, start Claude, hold the Voicy shortcut, and talk. Your words become text in Claude Code. Same flow, same magic.
Tips for Talking to Claude
Talking to your computer feels a little strange at first. Here are some tips to make it smooth:
- Speak in full sentences. Don't say single words or fragments. Say what you mean like you're explaining it to a friend.
- Pause between thoughts. If you have a long request, it's okay to take a breath. The app will wait for you.
- Don't worry about perfect grammar. These apps are smart. They clean up your speech and make it readable.
- You can still type whenever you want. Voice is just another option. Use it when you have a lot to say. Type when you have something short.
- Try it for follow-up questions. After Claude does something, just hold the key and say "now change the background to dark purple" or "add a button at the bottom." Quick voice follow-ups feel really natural.
What You Learned
You now know how to talk to Claude Code instead of typing. Install a voice-to-text app (SuperWhisper on Mac, Voicy on any platform), hold a keyboard shortcut, and speak. Your words become text, Claude reads them, and your computer does what you asked.
This is especially great for long, detailed prompts. Instead of spending two minutes typing out exactly what you want, you can say it in ten seconds. Your computer is finally listening.
