What You'll Do
You know that Downloads folder? The one with 847 files you never sorted? Claude can fix that in about two minutes.
You will ask Claude to look at your messy folder, sort files into categories, find duplicates, and rename things so they make sense. You will not move a single file yourself.
Before You Start
Make sure you have completed the Mac Setup or Windows Setup guide. You should be able to type claude in your terminal to start a conversation.
Step 1: Open Claude in Your Downloads Folder
Open your terminal and go to your Downloads folder:
cd ~/Downloads
claude
Claude will start up and is ready to help.
Step 2: Ask Claude to Look Around
Start by asking Claude what is in the folder:
Look at my Downloads folder and tell me how many files there are, what types they are, and if there are any duplicates.
Claude will scan your folder and give you a report. You might be surprised by what is in there.
Step 3: Sort Your Files
Now ask Claude to organize everything:
Create subfolders called Images, Documents, Videos, and Other. Move every file into the right subfolder based on its type. If you find duplicates, put them in a folder called Duplicates so I can review them.
Claude will create the folders and move everything. Your Downloads folder goes from chaos to clean.
Step 4: Clean Up Old Files
Want to go further? Ask Claude to find files you probably do not need:
Find any files in my Downloads folder that are older than 6 months and list them for me. Don't delete anything yet, just show me the list.
Review the list. If you want to delete them, tell Claude to go ahead.
What Else You Can Try
Once you see how this works, try these:
Rename all the screenshots in my Images folder to include the date they were taken.
Find all PDF files on my Desktop and move them to a folder called PDFs in Documents.
Look through my Documents folder and tell me which files I haven't opened in over a year.
What You Learned
You just had Claude clean up your computer without writing any code or moving any files yourself. This is what AI-powered productivity looks like. You describe the outcome, Claude does the work.
